How did our Big Stop story begin?

In 1985, we took hold of an idea that has gotten bigger every year

We’ve been rolling out our welcome mat at our Big Stop locations since the first one opened more than 30 years ago in Auld’s Cove, Nova Scotia. On opening day, Canadian country music legend Hank Snow sang while an Irving Oil hot air balloon sailed overhead. Everyone there felt it was the beginning of something beautiful!

We chose the name “Big Stop” because it’s a great name for a truly big and welcome stop along the highway. From the beginning, each one has had all the comforts of home for Professional Drivers, including lounges, showers and homestyle food − and we have always put out our welcome mat 24 hours a day!

It didn’t take long for us to realize the 80-seat Big Stop Restaurant at Auld’s Cove was too small. When we opened our next Big Stop in Aulac, NB, we built it to welcome 120 guests. We soon expanded our network to include Enfield, NS, and New Minas, NS, and today we have close to 30 Big Stop and travel plazas across Eastern Canada and the United States.

Many guests say the sight of a Big Stop along the road makes them smile, knowing they’ll feel right at home with clean washrooms, good food and a friendly atmosphere. And quite a few look forward to our delicious pies too!
